What is DNS and why should I care?

In short, Domain Name Servers (DNS) are the phonebooks of the Internet.

People access information online through Domain Names, like amazon.com or cnn.com – super easy to remember!

Web browsers (Chrome, Safari, etc.) access websites through Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, like 162.229.585.19 – not so easy to remember!

Domain Name Servers translate domain names to IP addresses so people can find and load websites more easily. Here’s a more detailed article describing DNS from our partner, Cloudflare.

It is probably obvious by now that if there is ever a problem with your DNS, people (most likely your customers) won’t be able to load your website. It is important that you know where your DNS is hosted and how to access your account. If you are with Sunny HQ, you can forget about it, because we handle it for you!
